Song Of The Day...Just My Imagination - The Temptations (1971)
"Just My Imagination" was released as a single by the Temptations in February of 1971. By end of March it had reached no. 1 on the Billboard Top 100, and stayed there for two weeks. It also reached no. 1 on the R & B charts, the third of four No. 1's racked up by Motown's most successful male group, The Temptations.
Eddie Kendricks took lead vocals on this track, which ended up being his last single with the group. An original member, Kendricks left The Temptations for a solo career soon after the song was released. Another founding member, Otis Williams, the de facto leader, also left the Temptations at this time due to health reasons.
Motown writers Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong wrote "Just My Imagination" in 1969. With the Temptations' psychedelic soul singles consistently keeping them in the US Top 20, Whitfield and Strong decided to hold the song and wait for the right time to record it. That time came in late 1970, when the Temptations' single "Ungena Za Ulimwengu (Unite the World)" failed to reach the Top 30. The rest is history, as "Just My Imagination" is now considered the "signature" song by the Temptations.
