"Ooh baby love, my baby love
I need you, oh how I need you
But all you do is treat me bad
Break my heart and leave me sad..."
"Baby Love" topped the Billboard pop singles chart from October 25, 1964, through November 21, 1964. With "Baby Love", the Supremes became the first Motown act to have more than one number one single Billboard Top 100 chart. "Baby Love" was the follow-up to "Where Did Our Love Go", The Supremes first #1 single.
The Supremes next three singles, "Come See About Me," "Stop! In the Name of Love" and "Back in My Arms Again" were all No. 1 hits as well. All five of these No. 1 songs were written by the Motown songwriting team of Holland-Dozier-Holland. According to Lamont Dozier, this song was about "my first love who I never really got over." Dozier says many of the songs he wrote with Motown were inspired by her.
